Nearly sixty percent of the world's geysers are found in Yellowstone National Park. Old Faithful Geyser was discovered and named in 1870 by members of the Washburn Expedition. For over a century Old Faithful has remained true to its name for its frequency, regularity, and size, making it an international icon. Old Faithful erupts every 60 to 90 minutes, an average of 17 times per day. Lasting only 1 1/2 to 5 minutes this geyser expels 3,700 to 8,400 gallons of boiling water to heights of 106 to 185 feet.
